Italy has required clearance through the Sistema di Interscambio (SdI) for B2B and B2C invoices since 1 January 2019, and for flat-rate taxpayers (forfettari) since 1 January 2024. Only FatturaPA XML is valid domestically; Peppol/EN 16931 alone is not enough.
Central clearance platform run by the Agenzia delle Entrate. Every invoice passes through SdI, which validates it and delivers it to the recipient; SdI is also the reporting channel.
Law 205/2017. Invoices arrive via the 7-character Codice Destinatario or a PEC address; a copy is always available in the Agenzia delle Entrate portal 'Fatture e Corrispettivi'. Foreign invoices are reported through SdI (TD17 to TD19, code XXXXXXX).
What to set up
Codice Destinatario(Every receiving business): 7-character routing code registered with SdI; alternatively a PEC address.
The period starts: Date of the last entry (Civil Code art. 2220); tax: until assessments for the period are final
10 years: Civil Code art. 2220; DPR 600/1973 art. 22 and DPR 633/1972 art. 39 (until assessments are final, capped by art. 2220). Cassazione ord. 2927/2026 confirms the 10-year cap; no 2026 budget-law change to 8 years was found (the '8 years' refers to the Agenzia's own storage of e-invoice files under D.L. 124/2019 art. 14).
Electronic invoices must be preserved electronically (conservazione sostitutiva, DM 17 Jun 2014); storage abroad only in a state with a mutual-assistance instrument; the Agenzia delle Entrate offers a free preservation service.
